Chocolate Custard Devil's Food

    Ingredients

    3 1-oz. squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
    1 1/2 cup milk
    1 egg beaten
    1 2/3 cup sugar
    1/2 cup shortening
    2 egg yolks, beaten
    2 cups cake flour
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. soda
    1 tsp. vanilla

    Directions

    Combine chocolate, 1/2 cup milk, 1 egg and 2/3
    cup sugar; mix well.  Cook over low heat until
    thick.  Cool.  Cream shortening and 1 cup sugar.  
    Add egg yolks; mix well.  Add sifted dry
    ingredients alternately with 1 cup milk.  Add
    vanilla.  Stir in chocolate custard mixture.  Pour
    into two 8-inch pans.
    Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes.
    Cool and frost with fudge icing.
    Sprinkle with powdered sugar when cooled.
